What is Flexible Retirement?

Flexible retirement enables employees (over 55) to continue working in some reduced capacity (e.g. part time) while at the same time drawing some of their pension benefits. You don’t need to retire and return to work – you negotiate flexible retirement while remaining employed. It is at the employer’s discretion. It is very rare for employers to agree to flexible retirement for the under 60s.

This course aims to:

  • Help you understand “flexible retirement” and how to apply for it
  • Give tips on how to successfully negotiate flexible retirement
  • Help you understand your employer’s flexible retirement policy

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand the barriers your application might face
  • Make a business case for your application
  • Understand other options e.g. “flexible working”

The course has two main parts:

  1. A booklet to read and questions to answer on the Local Government scheme.
  2. A booklet to read and questions to answer on flexible retirement.

This work is to be completed in your own time, at your own pace but within a dedicated 2 week period. There are no online, Zoom or Teams meetings.

The course will be supported on email by Dave McMonnies, your pension’s tutor and you will be able to ask your own specific questions and get a personalised answer.
