UNISON North West Region Women’s Committee is proud to launch a life-saving campaign today to stop women being discriminated against under current cancer screening guidelines and save the lives of 6 young UK women a day.
Government guidelines prevent health professionals working in the NHS from being able to offer women under 25 an inexpensive smear test. GPs and nurses can’t offer a test even if the woman’s medical history and worrying symptoms indicate they should.
That doesn’t happen to men who ask for a prostate examination.
The mission of UNISON’s Smear on Demand Campaign is simple: in addition to population screening, if a woman requests a smear test and her GP or nurse agrees, she is given one.
