School support staff meeting – 11 October 2021

UNISON North West are holding a Schools Support Staff Meeting on Monday 11th October 2021 at 6 pm which will last approximately 1 hour.

Cath Baggaley (Chair of the North West Schools Committee) will introduce the following by welcoming members to a forum in which we provide updates and guidance on the following topics:

COVID Update – Has the government forgotten school support staff again?

Jon Richards (Assistant General Secretary) will give a general overview on the  current situation, numbers of cases and absences in schools and discussions between UNISON and the Government.

Issues covered will include dealing with Anti Vax demonstrations, variance in responses across the country, the need for improved safety measures in schools and the additional expectations being placed on staff by increased workloads, and additional government initiatives, such as recovery/catch up.

Ventilation – Has your School received CO2 monitors?

Chris Fabby (National Officer) will explain how ventilation remains crucial in ensuring Safety of the Workforce and Children are put first.

He will also explain the confusing DfE guidance which differs from the Health & Safety Executive, how the DfE advice leaves staff how to improve ventilation and what happens when it goes above the recognised safety measures.

School Budgets – Support Staff at Risk

Pam Howard (National Chair for School Support Staff) will explain why UNISON is concerned with School Budgets and funding has to increase to assist with the shortfalls of Covid, utility charges, expense of school meals and the shortfalls in SEND funding.  All these issues are a major concern for UNISON because it could be grim for Support Staff who normally bear the brunt of any cuts or mismanagement that takes place.
