Guidance on mandatory vaccination of care home staff

UNISON North West will be holding an online meeting on Wednesday 22 September, at 6:00 pm, to discuss the introduction of mandatory vaccinations within residential social care. You can find further details at the bottom of this article.

From 11th November 2021, unless exempt, all individuals entering CQC-registered care homes in England will have to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This applies to all residential care workers but will also have implications for other workers who may have to visit care homes in their line of duty – such as district nurses, occupational therapists and social workers. It may therefore have implications for members employed by local councils, NHS employers or other organisations.

From 11th November 2021, CQC-registered care homes in England must only allow individuals who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (or exempt) entry into their premises. This requirement will also apply to those visiting a care home in a professional capacity unless exempt.

UNISON supports vaccination. We recognise that thousands of lives have been saved by the COVID vaccine and we encourage all members to have the vaccination.

However, we oppose the mandation of vaccines because we see this as a counter-productive method of encouraging vaccination, as well as another stick to drive away low-paid care workers from an already under-staffed social care sector.
