Covid-19 trade union support group

UNISON North West has been working with other trade unions and with Greater Manchester Hazards to build on what we have learned from assisting the families of members who have lost their lives to Covid-19.

This has developed into the North West Covid-19 Trade Union Support Group, which is holding an inaugural meeting at Arena Point over lunchtime on Friday 18th November 2022.

Covid-19 support group invitation

The meeting is open to the families of deceased members and to trade union reps who have supported them and/or lost colleagues to Covid themselves.

The group aims to:

  • Provide essential financial information and advice to the families of members lost to Covid-19 before the NHS and Social Care Coronavirus Life Assurance (England) Scheme closes in March 2023.
  • Establish a permanent memorial for North West residents to be able to reflect and remember loved ones lost to Covid – we will be seeking ideas on this at the meeting

  • Fight for justice for the bereaved and ensure the views of bereaved families and members affected by Covid are put forward to the public inquiry
  • Develop a Workplace Long Covid Charter to protect people from punitive sickness absence procedures, job loss and forced early retirement
  • Establish Covid preventions at work to better protect all workers from repeated infections and Long Covid
  • Develop accredited training courses for union reps covering how to set up support networks (including protecting yourself when dealing with stressful situations) and dealing with Covid, Long Covid and bereavement

Anyone who is unable to attend the meeting but who has ideas on ways to establish a permanent memorial in the North West is welcome to email j.walley@unison.co.uk before the meeting.
