Are you still feeling the strain?

In 2019 you reported to the branch growing levels of stress in your workplace. From a survey at that time, three specific areas emerged –

IMPROVED COMMUNICATION
Improved and transparent communications from senior level
management; regular Supervision that is meaningful and
supportive; a cultural change towards positive feedback rather
than negative feedback; and to be listened to, with action taken.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
An improved working environment addressing issues of bullying; less micro-management and more support provided during periods of change; actions that increase the sections morale; and a commitment to respect and to value the teams and the challenging work undertaken.

CASELOAD LEVELS
A genuine reduction in the high levels of cases; to receive
support when issues are flagged up; to work in full teams with a Manager; better IT and remote working with no drama; and to
provide a full admin support service.

The Executive Director of People’s Services and Chief Executive gave hope that the issues raised by our members would be looked at. Unfortunately, both senior officers have now left St Helens
Council. The 2021 members survey was intended to find out what has changed over this period, notwithstanding the pandemic.

Issues identified will be taken up again to push for more positive changes. In the meantime, please contact the branch to report any matters of immediate concern.
